Saw a mechanic at Sky Harbor use fingernail polish from the dollar store instead of the expensive torque seal, works just the same and costs about two bucks. Has anyone else tried this or is there a reason we should stick to the proper stuff?
Nail polish might look the same going on but it is not made for the same job. Torque seal is meant to crack and flake off when a bolt moves, that is the whole point, it tells you if something loosened up. Nail polish stays rubbery and can peel in one big sheet or just sit there looking fine when it should not. For two bucks you are saving nothing if a loose bolt goes unnoticed during a preflight, so on anything that actually matters I would spend the money on the real thing.
