Old timer told me lockwire was the only fastener, he was half right
Back in 2004 at the overhaul shop in Tulsa, a retired Navy chief swore safety wire would outlast every cotter pin and castellated nut we ever touched. He drilled that into me so hard I ignored the torque specs on a nose gear bolt, chased a vib issue for two days before finding the nut backed off a quarter turn. Now I use the cotter pin every time, but I still hear his voice every time I spin a prop. Anyone else have a mentor whose advice was right 80% of the time and wrong for the other 20%?

Tbh that story hits close to home because my first mentor was the opposite, he trusted torque wrenches so much he once told me lockwire was for people who couldn't read a spec sheet. Took me three stripped threads on an oil cooler line to realize he never checked his own calibration. Now I'm the guy who does both, torques it, drills it, wires it, and still wakes up at 3am wondering if the nut is gonna spin off. Honestly the only thing I learned for sure is that mentors are just people who have been wrong in more interesting ways than you have.
