A home inspector's one comment saved me $1,800 on a roof job

He pointed out that my flashing was tucked under the shingles instead of over, which was pushing water behind the fascia. I had two companies quote it before that and neither caught it, has anyone else run into inspectors catching stuff the contractors missed?

Thats a pretty common thing honestly. Contractors are there to sell a job, not necessarily to dig for problems that make the quote look worse. An inspector gets paid to find things and has no skin in the game when it comes to getting the work. The whole industry is set up that way, so it makes sense youd get a better result from the guy who has nothing to gain by staying quiet. Good inspectors are basically a second set of eyes that actually use them.
