I Finally Decided to Fix My Own Swamp Cooler Instead of Calling a Guy, and the $185 Difference Surprised Me
Last week my swamp cooler started blowing warm air and making a weird rattle, and I was about to call the same HVAC guy who charged me $185 just to look at it two summers ago. I sat in my kitchen on a Saturday morning in the Northeast Heights and did the math on a new cooler versus a $60 pump and some pads. I ended up watching a 12 minute video on my phone and crawling up on the roof with a bucket and a wrench. Took me about 3 hours because I dropped a nut in the gravel twice, but the pump swap and new pads got it running cold again. I had 4 tabs open and no clue what I was doing, but the thing actually worked. My neighbor Dave came over and said he's been paying someone $150 every spring for the same job. Now I'm wondering what else around this house I've been handing money over for. Has anyone else tackled their own cooler this season, and did I get lucky or is it really this simple?
