My uncle's 'just paint over it' fix finally bit me back

Back in 2010 my uncle helped me patch a ceiling leak in my North Valley place and said don't bother cutting out the drywall, just paint over the stain with primer. Worked fine for about a decade until last spring when that whole section sagged and dumped insulation water all over my couch. Turned out the leak was still dripping behind the wall the whole time, just hidden. Cost me $1,400 to redo that ceiling and fix the framing, plus a new couch. Anyone else ever take the quick patch route from a relative and regret it later?

Right, the old "just paint over it" special, the gift that keeps on giving. Sounds like your uncle was trying to save you $50 back in 2010 and ended up costing you $1,400 and a couch. Maybe he should stick to helping with stuff that doesn't involve water and gravity.
