PSA: My property tax assessment was off by $12,000 and nobody told me

I was looking through the county assessor website last week just out of curiosity and found out my house was assessed at $320,000. Thing is I bought it two years ago for $268,000. I called the assessor's office and they said I could file a protest before the deadline. I figured most people just pay what they're told but apparently you can challenge it. Has anyone else actually gone through the protest process and gotten their number lowered?

Got a buddy who went through this exact thing last year... his assessment was $15k over what he paid six months earlier. He filed the protest with his closing statement as proof and they knocked it down within a few weeks. Saved himself about $400 on his tax bill, said it was way easier than he expected.

That's awesome for your buddy, man. It's good to hear that the process actually works when you push back on it. My neighbor had a similar situation and he was sweating bullets over the whole protest thing, but it ended up being pretty painless for him too. It's kind of crazy how they try to slap a higher assessment on you right after you just bought the place, like they didn't see the sale price. Did your buddy say if he had to go to a hearing in person or if it was all done through the mail?
