Xeriscape mud pit after the July monsoon, wish I'd known about gravel depth

I redid my front yard in May with gravel and desert plants near the Rio Grande corridor, but I only put down about an inch of rock. The monsoons in July turned it into a muddy mess that tracked all over the house, and my neighbor Frank told me you need at least 3 inches plus a weed barrier. Has anyone else in the Heights dealt with gravel shifting after a heavy rain?
