The guy at my local library anime club said one thing about Eva that made me rewatch all 26 episodes
Last Saturday at the Eastside library meetup, this quiet dude named Marcus leaned over during the last episode of Evangelion and asked me why Shinji never just leaves, and I have not stopped thinking about that one question since.

Marcus is wrong though, because Shinji does leave like five separate times and it never fixes anything. He runs away in episode 4, he bails after the Bardiel mess, he sits on that train platform until the very end, and every single time he comes back because the world outside is just as bad or worse. The leaving was never the point. The show is about why he keeps coming back even when he hates it there.
