Thought that bone fragment my kid found in the flower bed was just a rock, turns out it's a 400 year old butchered deer bone
My 9 year old dug up this weird chunk of bone near our house in Boise about 6 months ago and I honestly thought it was a chicken bone from a BBQ. I finally took it to the local university's archaeology lab open house and a grad student there looked at it under a microscope and said the cut marks were made with a metal blade, which means it's from after European contact. She also pointed out the spiral fracture pattern that only happens when someone breaks it to get the marrow out. Now my kid wants to be an archaeologist, and I'm wondering if anyone here has had a random backyard find turn out to be something real?
