My old boss made us torque every drain plug to spec, new shop says hand tight is fine. Who's right?
Worked at a shop in Dayton for 6 years and the lead guy there was crazy about torque wrenches. Oil drain plugs, 18 ft lbs, every single time, no exceptions. He said he'd seen too many stripped pans and leaks come back. Last month I switched to a quick lube place and the manager told me to just snug them by feel, said a torque wrench on a drain plug is a waste of time and slows the line down. I get the speed thing, we do 40 cars a day. But I keep thinking about a customer who came in with a pan that had been overtightened somewhere else and it was not a cheap fix. So which is it? Are you guys actually torquing drain plugs or is that just something the old school guys do?
