Spent 11 hours on a no-start that turned out to be a $4 relay, was I stupid or was it the design?

I chased a crank-no-fire on a 2014 F-150 all day, swapped coils, sensors, even the PCM before I noticed the fuel pump relay was clicking but not closing under load, so my question is would you guys blame the intermittent relay or the guy who didn't scope the circuit first?
