Question about the 30 seconds of silence in Armageddon and my uncle's actual rocket story
So last month my uncle was visiting from Huntsville and we threw on Armageddon like always, and he starts laughing at the part where the asteroid has gravity like Earth. He worked on rocket engines for 31 years, mostly on the SSME, and he says the scene where they drill on the rock while it spins would fling them off at hundreds of miles an hour. Then he paused it and asked me why nobody in the movie wears a suit to handle the nuke, and I had no answer. He did admit the launch scene got the vibration right, which surprised me. Does anyone else have a family member who ruins space movies, or is it just my uncle?
Wait, the part about nobody wearing a suit to handle the nuke just broke my brain. I have seen Armageddon probably ten times and never once thought about that. That thing is radioactive and they are just passing it around like a cooler at a tailgate. Your uncle sounds like the best kind of person to watch movies with, honestly. The fact that he worked on the SSME for 31 years and still said the launch vibration was right is blowing my mind too, I figured everything in that movie was fake. Now I want to know what else he noticed that I missed.
