My starter cracked my countertop overnight

I left my sourdough starter on the granite countertop last Tuesday and woke up to a 6 inch crack right under the jar. The fermentation got warm enough overnight to stress the stone, I guess. Had to call a guy to patch it and he said a trivet would have saved me $150 easy. Anyone else had a batch actually damage their kitchen like this?

Fifty bucks for a pack of silicone trivets at the restaurant supply store. Saved my quartz counters last month. I put two under my jar now, one under the other. The fermentation heat is no joke, especially if you feed it a lot of flour. That crack repair cost you more than a good trivet set would. I also keep my starter on the opposite end of the counter now, away from the edge.

Read a post on reddit where someone's starter actually shattered a tile floor. It's wild how much heat those things can put off, especially if you feed them right before bed. Guess a folded-up dish towel under your jar is way cheaper than a repair bill, huh?
