My birthday cake turned into a leaning tower disaster

Tried a 3 layer chocolate cake for my partner's birthday yesterday, and the whole thing started to slide after I put the frosting on. I think my layers were still a bit warm from the oven, maybe after 45 minutes of cooling? The middle layer just pushed all the filling out the side. Had to prop it up with chopsticks and call it 'abstract art'. Anyone have a solid cooling time they swear by for tall cakes?

My neighbor's dog actually ate half his birthday cake one time. Whole thing was gone, just the cardboard base left. @the_dakota's freezer trick is solid though, I use it for cheesecake and it never fails. Cake layers need patience, I learned that after trying to rush one for my sister's wedding and it turned into a landslide on the counter. Chopsticks as art supports, that's a move I've pulled before too.

My wife's last layer cake looked like a modern art project too. I've learned to let the layers cool on the rack for a solid two hours now, no shortcuts.

Throw it in the freezer for 20 minutes, works every time.
