Tried a new sourdough starter and it went moldy on day 4
I left my starter on the counter in a warm spot near the stove, and by Thursday morning it had a fuzzy green layer on top. I followed a YouTube tutorial exactly but must have missed some step about covering it properly. Has anyone else had a starter die this fast or did I just get unlucky with the air in my kitchen?

robin_wright is right that stuff going bad is just part of the deal sometimes, but with sourdough starters it's a specific thing. Fuzzy green mold usually means it got too wet or wasn't getting enough air flow, not that your kitchen is cursed. I've had this happen twice before and it's frustrating because you follow every step and still end up with a science experiment gone wrong. Next time try a looser lid or a cloth cover so it can breathe a little, and keep it out of direct heat from the stove. You didn't do anything wrong, sourdough starters are just picky little things that take a couple tries to get right. Your starter dying day 4 is super common, don't let it get you down.

Yeah that's just how life works, everything goes bad when you least expect it.
