Watch out for card skimmers at the gas pump in Nashville

I stopped for gas off I-40 in Nashville last week and my debit card got hit with three fake charges within hours. The pump looked totally normal no loose parts or weird tape, but the skimmer must have been hidden inside. My bank caught it and reversed the $260, but now I only use credit cards for gas or pay inside. Has anyone else had luck with those RFID blocking sleeves or are they just hype?

My cousin had the same thing happen to him in Memphis last year except they cloned his card and used it at a Target two states over... the weird part was the pump he used had a security seal that looked intact. I tried one of those RFID sleeves for a few months and honestly it just felt like a piece of foil wrapped around my card. What I want to know is did you check the pump for that little blue security sticker they're supposed to have, or was it completely missing?

Man you're making me rethink my whole approach to this. I used to be one of those people who just waved off the whole security sticker thing, figured it was just another piece of plastic that thieves would get around anyway. But after reading about your cousin's situation, especially the part about the intact seal, I'm starting to realize how easy it is for them to fake those stickers or just leave them looking fine while the inside is compromised. It's wild how they can copy a card from a pump that looks totally normal, no broken seals or anything. I had a similar experience with a gas station in Cleveland where I swore the pump was fine but my card got hit with a $600 charge from a Walmart in Texas the next week. Now I'm paranoid about every pump I use, even if the sticker is there. Maybe I should go back to paying cash inside, feels like that's the only safe option these days.
