A court in Florida pulled a book from a 9th grade class while a parent complaint got another one kept, and the difference was one thing
Two books I taught got challenged in the same school year at my old district near Tampa, and the outcomes could not have been more different. Book A was pulled from a 9th grade reading list in under 2 weeks, mostly because the parent who filed the form came with page numbers, quotes, and a written reason tied to a specific lesson plan. Book B was a different story, same kind of complaint, same district rules, but the parent just wrote 'this book is inappropriate' on the form and nothing else. A panel of 3 teachers reviewed it for 6 weeks and voted 2 to 1 to keep it on the shelf. What made the difference was how specific the complaint was. The vague one had nothing to point at, so the review went nowhere, even though in my view the content in Book B was tougher than Book A. If you are fighting a challenge in your own district, write down the exact pages, the exact assignment, and the exact worry, because a general complaint just gets filed and forgotten. Has anyone in here sat on one of these review panels and seen a vague complaint actually win?
