Can we talk about how a Texas school district rewrote the same novel twice in 8 years and nobody noticed the second edit?
I have been tracking challenged books in Texas districts since 2015 and pulled the approved reading lists from a district near Houston for the same title in 2016 and again in 2024. In 2016 the book was pulled from 3 high schools after 11 parent complaints about a single chapter, then restored 7 months later with a note saying no changes had been made. Last year the same title came back on the list but 14 pages of the original text were gone, mostly the narrator's internal thoughts about race, and the district never held a public vote on it. Everyone argues about outright bans and nobody checks the quiet edits, which are way harder to fight because there is no headline. Has anyone else compared old and new printings of a challenged title side by side?
