I thought the school board in my town was right to pull that book, then I sat through the meeting
Last month in Council Bluffs they voted to pull a novel from the 9th grade reading list, and I honestly shrugged it off until I went to the next board meeting and heard 14 parents read the same two paragraphs out of context. A retired English teacher stood up and read the whole chapter around those paragraphs, and the room went quiet because the meaning flipped completely. Has anyone here gone to a local board meeting and actually gotten them to reverse a removal?
Man, I once sat through a three hour meeting about a parking lot and still couldn't tell you what got decided, so you're already doing better than me just by showing up. But that retired teacher move is the real thing. I've seen it happen once in my own town, where a mom read the "bad words" list off a sheet someone handed her, and then a librarian pulled the actual book and showed the room the words were from a character the author was clearly making fun of. The board still voted to keep it restricted, but two members changed their votes, which felt like a win. So yeah, full reversal is rare, but getting them to blink is possible. Show up, bring the chapter, make them read the whole thing out loud, that's the play.
