Saw a 'free library' box in Tupelo get emptied out over a Captain Underpants book and it changed how I shop for my kids
Honestly I was just dropping off some old paperbacks at that little box outside the coffee shop on Main St in Tupelo last Saturday, and a guy was pulling every Dav Pilkey book out of it and stuffing them in a trash bag. I asked why and he said the books teach kids to disrespect adults, which made me start reading banned lists for real. Tbh I never thought about how a silly book about a principal in his underwear could freak people out that much. Ngl, now I look up every title before I hand it to my 8 year old. Has anyone else had a random run in like that at one of those little free libraries?
The part about pulling every Dav Pilkey book out and trashing them really gets me, because I watched almost the same thing go down at a little lending shelf near the park by my place, except this lady was yanking out anything with a talking animal that sassed a grown up. She told me those books give kids ideas, and I just stood there holding a Frog and Toad I was about to drop off. Weird thing is my oldest hated reading until a "bad" book finally hooked him, and then he moved on to real chapter books on his own. So yeah, the freak out over silly stuff makes me check titles too, but mostly I just hand the kid the book and see what happens.
