Dropped $85 on a VPN after my ISP throttled me for streaming, now I'm on the other side of the debate

I was all about free speech and open internet until my provider capped my speeds during a live debate stream. The VPN fixed it fast, but now I see why some countries block certain meme pages and sites, it's not always about control, sometimes it's about traffic or local laws. For example, my buddy in Toronto can't even load some US meme archives without one. So is paying for privacy just another way to opt out of the system, or does it actually weaken the push for net neutrality?
