I argued for taking down that viral meme about the Portland protest
I always thought if a meme caused real world harm, like directing harassment at a specific person, platforms had a duty to remove it. That changed for me when I saw a news clip from a 2021 city council meeting where a guy said the bans just made the ideas spread offline, harder to track. Now I think leaving it up and adding context is better. What's a meme you think should have been left alone with a warning label instead?

That logic just lets hate fester online, though.

Push back too hard and you risk silencing people who are genuinely trying to learn or just vent frustration, not spread hate. From what I've seen, a lighter touch often lets those conversations work themselves out more naturally.

Read an article about how some platforms actually see more hate when they try to moderate too hard. It can push people into worse corners of the internet.
