That church meme about the Easter pageant got my local group chat nuked in 20 minutes
Someone in my Bible study forwarded this meme of a guy in a cheap robe holding a Starbucks cup during a passion play, captioned 'Communion drive thru now open.' Funny, right? I posted it in our neighborhood Facebook group of like 400 people. Within 20 minutes the admin took it down, and then three people started a whole thread about blasphemy. One lady named Carol threatened to report me to the diocese. The kicker is I'm not even Catholic, I just thought it was a joke about how everything's commercialized now. The meme itself is still floating around on Reddit, but in Memphis that counts as a hate crime I guess. Has anyone else had a totally tame meme get them treated like a criminal in a local group?
...and honestly the Carols of the world are exactly why I stopped posting anything even slightly funny in local groups. Like, I get it, church stuff can be touchy, but there's a huge difference between making fun of the faith and poking at how we've turned everything into a fast food experience. I saw the same meme in a Catholic Facebook group and people were cracking up about the Starbucks cup, saying their parish coffee hour is basically the same thing. It's wild how one city's vibe can turn a harmless joke into a whole drama with threats and everything.
