Everyone froze when a student mentioned that old novel in class

I was in a class discussion a while ago. A guy tried to bring up '1984' for his paper. The teacher said we should only use new books. The room went quiet, and no one spoke up after that.

Wait, books expire now? Guess I should check the date on my copy of 1984, it might have gone bad.

Books don't expire, but they can degrade. Check for yellowed pages or a musty smell, which means mold. Keep them in a dry place away from sunlight. I had to toss a few old paperbacks that fell apart from dampness.
