Serious question, why did it take me 2 hours to figure out a simple clipper fade?

I've been cutting hair for about 4 years now, and last Tuesday I had this kid come in who wanted a mid skin fade with a hard part. Simple stuff right? Well I spent almost 2 full hours on his head because every time I thought I had the blend right, I'd step back and see this dark line right above his ear. I kept going back and forth between my 1 guard and my 0.5 guard, flicking out, trying different angles, and nothing was fixing it. Finally my coworker Dave watched me for like 30 seconds and said "you're going too fast, slow your hand way down when you flick out." I slowed it down and the line disappeared instantly. Two hours of frustration solved by one sentence. Has anyone else had a simple fix like that take way too long to figure out?

My buddy Marcus went through literally the same thing but with a beard trim. He spent an hour and a half trying to even out his jawline and kept making it worse, like a lopsided mess. His girlfriend walked in and just said "dude you're holding the trimmer at a weird angle, tilt your wrist down." Fixed it in 45 seconds flat. It's wild how something that tiny can waste so much time. He still brings it up whenever we talk about haircut struggles.

You ever notice Dave's always the one with the simple fix?
