Older smith told me my hammer hand was too tense, fixed my wrist pain in 2 weeks

After 8 years swinging a 3 lb hammer in Portland, my wrist was shot. A retired farrier watched me for 5 minutes and said 'you're choking the hammer like it owes you money.' Relaxed my grip and let the weight drop naturally, plus switched to a longer handle. Anyone else get told to change their grip after years of doing it one way?

Took me a solid year to unlearn the death grip after a machinist buddy pointed it out. Swapped to a 14 inch handle and my elbow stopped singing too. Funny how the fix is just letting the tool do the work.
