Took 4 tries to get my forge fire right, now I pack the coal different

I used to pile coal on in big chunks and wait forever for the heat to spread, got nothing but cold spots and wasted fuel. Switched to a wet-packed layer around the firepot after watching an old timer at a demo in Boise, and now my billets heat even in half the time. Anyone else switch their coal method and see a big difference in their work?
