A guy at my local game store in Tulsa taught me to lose my first game of every new board game on purpose
He said playing to win on game one makes you hate the game instead of learning it. So now I tank my first round of anything new, and I picked up Wingspan in 2 games instead of 6. Does anyone else do this or is it just a Tulsa thing?
Did you ever watch someone do this with a game they were already good at? My buddy tried it with Twilight Imperium after playing it for years on TTS. He sandbagged the whole first round, gave away his home system stuff, acted confused about the rules he knew cold. Problem was the other three guys at the table had no idea he was faking and just kept piling on him for the next five hours. Game ended at 2am, he came in dead last for real, and he still talks about how that loss taught him more about table talk than any win ever did. The Tulsa guy might actually be onto something.
