Rant: My game group's campaign save got wiped because I trusted the cloud

Last Tuesday I showed up to run our weekly Gloomhaven session and the app had zero data. Turns out the auto-sync overwrote our 40 hour campaign save with a blank profile. I spent the whole evening recreating character sheets from memory and we still lost two cities worth of progress. Has anyone else had a digital tool just nuke their board game record like that?

Man, I feel your pain. "Auto-sync overwrote our 40 hour campaign" is a special kind of gut punch. I've had it happen with a different digital tool for a board game, where the app decided the cloud backup was the only truth. Now I always manually export a save file to a separate folder before I close out. Like @charles_chen93 said, that extra step takes ten seconds but saves you from having to rebuild character sheets from scratch. I keep a physical notebook with city event results and unlocked items too, just in case. That Gloomhaven app is convenient but I don't trust any cloud service with my campaign progress anymore.

Man, "auto-sync overwrote our 40 hour campaign" is basically my worst nightmare. I read about this happening with a different digital companion for a board game, where the app just decided the cloud backup was more important than what was on your actual device. It's one of those things that makes me paranoid now, I always manually export a save file to a separate folder before I exit any digital tool for a game. Sucks that you had to rebuild all those characters from memory, that's a whole level of frustration I wouldn't wish on anyone.
