That $200 flange facing tool barely fit my bolt pattern

Bought one off the truck last month for a job in Port Arthur, ended up having to grind 3/16 off the housing just to clear the studs. Got the fit done but now I'm wondering if I should've just built a custom jig like the older guys swear by, anyone else run into aftermarket tool clearance issues on older vessels?
