Was totally against those fancy welding hoods until I borrowed one last week

I always thought spending $400 on a Lincoln Viking was a waste when my $80 fixed shade worked fine. Then this old timer at the union hall in Gary let me borrow his for a job and I could actually see my puddle through the gauge. My welds looked way cleaner and I didn't have to keep flipping my hood up. Any other guys here feel like the auto-darkening is worth the money or am I just being lazy?

You ever notice how the same thing happens with tools and pretty much everything else in life? @sarah198 is right, it's not about being lazy, it's about using the tool that actually works. I've seen this pattern everywhere, like how people swear by manual transmission until they drive a good automatic, or how guys insist on a hammer until they try a nail gun. Once you get past the stubbornness and just try the better option, you see the difference. It's just human nature to dig in on what we know until we get a real chance to see what we're missing.

I borrowed a Miller auto-darkening from a guy named Pete down at the shop here in Gary and it changed my whole setup. I was like you, all stubborn about my old fixed shade hood. But man, being able to see the puddle and the joint at the same time without flipping the hood up and down saved me so much time and frustration. My welds got way more consistent too. It's not about being lazy, it's just a tool that actually works better for the job.
