A guy in my club called audiobooks 'cheating' for 2 years, then we tried both ways on one book
Our book club in Boulder spent 6 weeks on a 400 page novel and half of us read it while the other half listened. The readers finished in 3 weeks, but the listeners brought up details from chapter 12 that the rest of us missed. We did a blind discussion where nobody said which way they went, and the audio group had better recall of the dialogue and pacing. I was the loudest person saying listening does not count, and I was wrong. The readers skimmed the slow parts, which is exactly what people accuse listeners of doing. If you think reading is always deeper, try both on the same book and keep score. Am I missing something, or is this just gatekeeping?
