Our book club fell apart over a 4 star rating debate

We were discussing a historical fiction pick and one member said it was basically a romance novel in disguise. That set off a 45 minute argument about genre labels and suddenly people were choosing sides like it was a political election. Two members quit our club chat that night and we lost our meeting spot at the library because the librarian heard the shouting through the wall. I swear we used to just talk about plot holes and character arcs, now everything feels like a court case. Has anyone else had a book club split over something as simple as a star rating or a genre tag?
