The 1998 audio book club version vs the 2023 re-record, why did we lose the fire?

I pulled out the old cassette set my group used back in '98 and the new narrator sounds so polished and calm, but the original guy was basically yelling at us during the plot twist, so which reading actually changes how we debate the book's ending, and has anyone else noticed this shift in energy over 25 years?

Remember listening to that old cassette in my book club back then and we actually had to pause it because the narrator got so worked up during the twist that we could hear him breathing heavy. The new version feels like someone reading a bedtime story, all smooth and polite, and honestly it changes everything about how you read that final chapter. I think we lost the raw emotion somewhere along the way, like the fire got tamed down to make it more professional. That anger and urgency in the old recording made you feel the character's panic, not just hear about it. My group still quotes that frantic line from the '98 tape, and the new guy just glides right over it. We definitely got more arguments going back then because that voice put everyone on edge, and that was part of the fun.
