Just realized I was overwatering my pothos for 2 years

I always thought droopy yellow leaves meant thirsty, so I kept dumping more water in. Last month I repotted it in my kitchen in Denver and saw the roots were basically mush, that's when it hit me. I looked up root rot symptoms and every single sign matched what my plant had been doing since I got it from a garage sale in 2022. Has anyone else mixed up overwatering and underwatering for way too long? How did you finally figure out your plant's actual schedule?
