Burned $64 on fancy freezer meal kits that tasted like wet cardboard, back to my $1.20 chili
So against my better judgment I signed up for one of those freezer meal delivery things three weeks ago. The ad got me with the whole "home cooked meals without the work" pitch and the intro price of $64 for 12 meals sounded decent, about $5.30 a plate. Every single one came out mushy or bland. The "beef stroganoff" had this weird gluey sauce and the chicken teriyaki was sweet enough to make my teeth hurt. I did the math after and that $64 would have covered almost two weeks of my normal dinners, which is a big pot of chili that runs me about $9 total and gives me six meals, or a tray of baked ziti for like $11 that lasts four days. The worst part is I ate all of them anyway because I wasn't about to toss $64 in the trash. Lesson learned the hard way. Anyone got a freezer meal they actually make themselves that doesn't turn to mush when you reheat it?
Your math is a little off on the chili though. $9 for six meals is a buck fifty a plate, not $1.20, unless you're getting your beans and meat cheaper than I ever manage. Not a huge deal, but if we're comparing to that $5.30 freezer meal price, the gap is even wider than you think. Anyway, my go-to is a big batch of pulled pork in the crockpot, shred it, freeze it in small bags with a little of the juice, and it reheats great because it's already soft. Thaw it in the fridge overnight and warm it slow, not in the microwave on high, that's what turns most stuff rubbery. What kind of freezer space are you working with?
