The 28-cent rice trick that made me ditch my rice cooker

I used to always buy those flavored rice packets because I thought plain rice was flavorless. Last month I ran out and had to make plain rice with a bay leaf and a spoon of Better than Bouillon I had in the fridge. It cost me maybe 28 cents for two cups versus the $1.50 packets, and honestly it tasted better. I felt like an idiot for spending all that money for years on something so easy to fix. Has anyone else had a moment where the budget version was actually the better one, or is my taste just weird?
