Warning: I almost paid $22 a night for hostel lockers until a guy in Cusco showed me the front desk trick
Last spring I was in Cusco for 5 nights and the hostel wanted 40 soles per night for a locker, which came out to about $11 a night on top of my room. A guy from Ireland staying in my dorm told me to just ask the front desk to hold my passport and laptop in their office safe instead, since most places do it free and never advertise it. I tried it the next morning and the girl at the desk just wrote my name on a sticky note and locked my stuff in a drawer behind her. Saved me around $55 over the trip and honestly I felt safer than with the flimsy lockers. Anyone else got tricks for keeping your gear safe without paying the locker fee?
