Warning: I booked a $19 hostel in Lisbon and ended up paying $60 a night anyway
So last spring I grabbed a cheap hostel bed in Lisbon for $19 a night, thinking I cracked the code on budget travel in Europe. Turns out the "free" breakfast was just bread, the locker rental was $4 a day, and they charged me $15 for towels and sheets that weren't listed anywhere on the booking page. By the end of 5 nights I was out almost $300, which is more than the private room down the street would have cost. Now I'm torn on whether cheap hostels are worth the gamble or if I should just pay more upfront and skip the surprise fees. Has anyone else gotten nickel and dimed like this, or did I just pick a bad spot?
