Showerthought: While visiting Iran last month, I noticed a newsstand selling only state-approved papers with no alternative sources in sight.
The guy running it told me quietly that they get raided twice a month if anything slips through, has anyone else seen this kind of setup in other countries?

Maybe it's just me but I've seen censorship like this in a bunch of places, not just Iran. When I was visiting Turkey a few years back, I noticed the newspaper stands there also only carried papers that were friendly to the government. The guy explained the same thing about getting raided if they sold anything critical. It's definitely a thing in countries with tighter controls on information. I mean, we've got our own issues with media bias in the US, but at least we can still buy alternative papers at most places. Seems like the difference is about how open the system is about it.

Carry a small offline map and download a VPN before you land, that saved me in similar spots. @barbarab56 nailed it about Turkey, same playbook there but theyre more sneaky about it. Best move is to ask locals where the real news gets shared, usually a cafe or a group chat does the trick.
