I called fish tape a crutch for 6 years and now I feel like an idiot on every drop
I used to give guys a hard time if they grabbed fish tape for anything other than a straight shot through empty conduit. My old lead in Bakersfield drilled it into me that real installers use a glow rod and a magnet, and fish tape was for people who didn't know how to read a wall. Then two weeks ago I hit this 1940s house near Fresno with fire blocking on every stud bay and insulation packed in tight, and I burned 45 minutes trying to push a rod through a cavity that had three layers of old drywall patch in it. My helper finally tossed me his 50 foot steel tape, and I had the run done in under 4 minutes, no attic trip, no cuttin a second access hole in the homeowner's closet. I stood there feeling dumb because I had been making drops harder for 6 years just to protect some idea about what counts as proper technique. Nobody cares what you use if the coax is terminated right and the wall looks clean when you leave. Any of you had a tool you wrote off for years and then ate crow on later?
Back in 2019 I swore off a 3/8 flex bit after snapping two in one week and told everybody they were junk. Bought another one last month for a tight top plate and drilled four holes clean, so yeah, that crow tasted great.
