Serious question, has anyone else seen the repair side of the trade change since around 2019?
So I pulled out my old job log from 2019 and compared it to how I work now, and the difference honestly blew my mind. Back then, about 70 percent of what came through my bench in Portland was mechanical stuff, shutter timing, mirror box issues, lens helicoid cleans, that kind of thing. Now it feels like 70 percent is board level work, flex cable swaps, sensor replacements, and firmware headaches that do not even have a physical part to point at. I think two things caused it. First, mirrorless bodies took over and there is just less mechanical stuff to fail. Second, the shops that survived learned to solder and read schematics instead of just turning screws. Some old timers I know say this ruined the trade and turned us into phone repair guys. Others say it saved us because nobody else wants to touch a dead mainboard. I am honestly split on it. What side are you all on, and has your own bench mix shifted the same way?
