Took me 15 years to realize my lens cleaning habit was stripping coatings

Back in 2012 I was working on a Canon 50mm f/1.4 in Portland and kept seeing faint streaks after cleaning. Turns out I was using way too much pressure with the microfiber cloth, basically micro-scratching the coating. A older guy at a trade show in Seattle watched me do it once and asked if I ever let the fluid sit for 30 seconds first. I switched to lighter passes and letting the solution do the work, night and day difference. Has anyone else found that their technique from the early days embarrasses them now?
