A stranger's critique of my footprint ruined my whole setup

Last summer at a site near Lake Tahoe, a guy walked by my tent and said my footprint was sticking out too far, catching rain and funneling it under the vestibule. I thought it was just nitpicking, but after a wet night where my sleeping bag corner got damp, I measured it and he was right. I trimmed 4 inches off each side and angled the corners inward. Has anyone else had a random comment that turned out to save them from a bigger problem?
