Am I the only one who got roasted by a 70 year old at a campsite about my sleeping pad setup?
Last month my buddy and I drove out to Green River in Utah for a quick overnight trip, and I was feeling pretty good about my new sleeping pad setup, the kind you inflate about 90 percent and it's supposed to be super comfy. This older guy pulls up next to us in a van that looks older than me, starts chatting, real friendly. He asks what pad I've got, and I tell him, and he just goes quiet for a second and says "Son, that thing is gonna feel like a tarp by 2am." I laughed it off, but then he shows me his setup, a closed cell foam pad under a basic inflatable, total cost maybe 40 bucks at a surplus store in Grand Junction. I'm not gonna lie, he slept like a rock and I was up half the night sliding around and losing air. Weird part is, he wasn't smug about it at all, he just handed me a spare foam pad in the morning and told me to try it before I spend more cash. Now I'm second guessing whether the fancy pad is worth it or if I just got sold on marketing. Has anyone else ditched the expensive pad after someone at a campsite showed them a cheaper two pad stack that actually worked?
