Hot take: a guy at the REI in Denver told me my tent stakes were garbage and he was right
I posted my setup in a gear review thread and one commenter said my 6 inch aluminum stakes were the weak link, which bugged me at first. Then I bent 4 of them in one trip to Rocky Mountain National Park. I switched to 9 inch steel ones for $3 more per stake and pulled them out of hard ground no problem. Now I carry both, aluminum for weight and steel for the rocky stuff. Anyone else match stakes to soil or just grab whatever's in the bag?
Matched to soil" sounds like a lot of homework for something you shove in the dirt with your foot. I've used the same cheap aluminum stakes for years across all kinds of ground and the only times I bent one was when I hit a rock I couldn't see, which steel would've hated too, honestly. Carrying two sets of stakes just so one set can sit in the bag feels like it adds weight for maybe one trip a year where it saves you. Maybe it's just me but a bent stake bends back with a rock or your boot and you move on.
