I ditched my expensive inflatable pad for a foam one after one cold night
Last October in the Smokies, my $180 inflatable pad lost air around 2 AM and I woke up on frozen ground with my back screaming. I switched to a closed-cell foam pad that cost $35 and weighs way less. Sure, it's not as plush, but I've slept fine on it for 8 trips since, including a 3-night stretch in Pisgah. The real kicker is I don't stress about punctures or spend 10 minutes blowing the thing up. Am I missing something about high-end air pads, or is foam just the smarter call for most folks?
This is the same thing that happens with cars and phones, where the fancy features sound great until the day they break and leave you stuck. The more parts something has, the more ways it can let you down, and out on a trail that math gets real ugly real fast. Sometimes boring and basic is just the smarter way to go.
