PSA: Skip the combo tent and tarp kits, just buy them separate
Last spring I had $150 set aside for a shelter setup and stood in the aisle at the Reno REI for 40 minutes stuck between a bundled tent plus footprint kit and buying a cheap tent and a plain blue tarp on their own. The bundle looked clean and saved me maybe $12, so I grabbed it. First trip out to Tahoe in May, the footprint that came in the kit was cut about 4 inches short on one side, so rain ran right under the tent floor and soaked my sleeping bag by 2am. I checked the reviews after and found like 30 other people saying the same thing about that exact kit. I returned it and spent $60 on a basic dome tent and $15 on a 8x10 tarp from the hardware store, and that setup has kept me dry through four trips since. The tarp lets me set up a little porch area too, which the kit footprint never could. Has anyone else run into bundled gear where one piece is clearly the weak link?
