That $60 tarp saved my tent from a creek that wasn't on the map. Last spring I set up next to what looked like a dry gully in Pisgah National Forest. Middle of the night I heard water moving and woke up with my tent floor floating. My cheap stake kit did nothing, but I had grabbed an inexpensive poly tarp and some paracord at the last second for like $60 total. I managed to trench around the tent and rig the tarp as a quick rain fly side wall, which kept my sleeping bag dry until morning. The tent itself was only $120 but would have been ruined without that tarp. Now I always pack a bigger tarp than I think I need, especially near any water feature. Has anyone else been saved by a random piece of gear you almost left behind?

Damn, that is a hell of a wake-up call. Floating in the dark in Pisgah, no map creek turning into a river, I would have panicked and lost half my gear. Good call on grabbing the cheap tarp, sometimes the junk we nearly skip is the stuff that saves the whole trip.
