A manager in Columbus cut me off mid sentence, and I finally get why
Back in 2016 I worked at a call center in Columbus and during a team huddle I tried to bring up a fix for our ticket system that would have saved us about 20 minutes per shift. My manager held up her hand and said "that's not something we talk about here" in front of all 11 of us, and I just sat there red faced. At the time I thought she was being a jerk, but looking back she was probably protecting me from the folks above her who hated new ideas from the floor. What I learned is that sometimes a shut mouth has nothing to do with you and everything to do with the room. Has anyone else been told to drop something they knew was a good idea?
Watching this play out, the real problem is that the manager never came back to you later to explain why she shut it down. A good boss protects you in the room but pulls you aside after and says "here is why that did not fly, try it this way next time." Otherwise you just learn to keep your head down forever and nobody up top ever hears the good ideas.
